Orange You Glad It's January

Orange is my favorite color. And what could be brighter to warm up a winter's day (although, with the way the weather's been lately, I wonder if we really need to warm this winter up any more).

Lets start with some wearables, i.e. hats and scarves. The Newsboy Cap from Bella Starr Hats would top off an outfit nicely. And the super chunky scarf from BunnyBear Designs would be perfect for a chilly day (maybe in February?). The handpainted silk scarf from Muse Silk Paintings would work perfectly in this weather, though.

Next I found earrings. There were so many wonderful orange choices! It was hard to limit it to three (maybe I should just do an orange earrings post?). These by NansGlam, pila12903, and Beach Girl Beads are the perfect pop of color for a sunny shiny day.

I'm always looking for good tote bags, and here are some with pops of orange by Nasila's Knits, Nani Originals, and LeahsHeart.

Finally, I stumbled across some pottery as well as a little dinosaur (from Drella Jones, zebest pottery, and Primitive Pots).

So much orange. So little time.

Happy Brownie Day!

Yep, you read right. December 8th's little known holiday is National Brownie Day. And with that in mind, I thought I'd share my favorite brownie recipe along with some fun brownie-themed CCCOE goodies because, as you know, there aren't really a lot of sweets lying around the kitchen in December...

Fudgy Brownies from Epicurious.com

10 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter
1 1/4 cups sugar
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-process)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 cold large eggs
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2/3 cup walnut or pecan pieces (optional)

Position a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat the oven to 325°F. Line the bottom and sides of an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper or foil, leaving an overhang on two opposite sides.

Combine the butter, sugar, cocoa, and salt in a medium heatproof bowl and set the bowl in a wide skillet of barely simmering water. Stir from time to time until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth and hot enough that you want to remove your finger fairly quickly after dipping it in to test. Remove the bowl from the skillet and set aside briefly until the mixture is only warm, not hot.

Stir in the vanilla with a wooden spoon. Add the eggs one at a time, stirring vigorously after each one. When the batter looks thick, shiny, and well blended, add the flour and stir until you cannot see it any longer, then beat vigorously for 40 strokes with the wooden spoon or a rubber spatula. Stir in the nuts, if using. Spread evenly in the lined pan.

Bake until a toothpick plunged into the center emerges slightly moist with batter, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool completely on a rack.

Lift up the ends of the parchment or foil liner, and transfer the brownies to a cutting board. Cut into 16 or 25 squares.

Treasury Challenge #3 Such A Great Turn Out

The theme: Woodland, Forest, Nature

The ending of October found the California Crafters Club of Etsy Team closing up Treasury Challenge #3 with the theme: Woodland, Forest, Nature with such a great turnout. There was such a wide arrange of gorgeous Treasuries submitted for the running, making it very difficult to decide on just one however Curator Lisa Carpenter, owner of NouveauTique should be proud to take the title as winner for this challenge with her Treasury entry called “They Got Lost Along the Way”.

Lisa comes to CCCOE as an artisan of Modern Vintage Jewelry, Art and Gifts creating unique, one of a kind pieces by deconstructing vintage jewelry and using parts to reconstruct her new creative pieces. Here are a few gorgeous tid bits of what she has to offer

Ponchos and Wraps and Mittens (oh my!)

In this part of California (southern), the weather just turned chilly, and the forecast says it's going to be chilly for at least the next week. So, I started looking for stuff to keep me warm.

A poncho is perfect to throw over whatever you are wearing. There are so many different ones to choose from...

Treasury Challenge- Who Won September and How you Can Win in October

The first California Crafters Club of Etsy Treasury Challenge for September kicked us off in high gear. We had all kinds of treasuries on the theme of "Halloween". Some of us went for the cute and autumnal themes, some of us kept it classy and elegant and others went for dark and "Spoooooooky"....like our stunning, winning treasury from SandySimone!

Infusing nature into personal style seems especially fitting for fall, when the changing colors and textures of the landscape around us take center stage. New Finds

New shops join the CCCOE team all the time. Curious, I decided to check out some of those shops that have joined us since my last post. I found all sorts of interesting things.

First, I found these magical items...

I so want that wand from Refined Pallet, and the Fortune Teller Ring from Jewelry You Love is just so fun.

Then, in the decor department...

...there's the "Peace" lantern by Earthworks and the Candle with a Handle by Blacksmith Creations.

The newest hot trend in jewelry are the feather earrings. I prefer taking trends with a twist...

Get some Real Butterfly Wing Earrings by Natural Flipside or earrings that have the feathery feel from Caposhi Handmade. (I wondered about using real butterfly wings for earrings, but the description assures that the wings were made from already deceased butterflies.)

Finally, I couldn't skip my first love, knit (and crochet)...

Did you know that today was a holiday? Maybe not a get-off-work holiday but special nonetheless. August 8 is "Leave Some Zucchini on Your Neighbor's Porch Day." My yard is small and my thumb is black so I won't be a leaver but hopefully I'll be a leavee. If so, I'll make some of these, my favorite enchiladas ever.

Zucchini Enchiladas
6 corn tortillas
1 cup oil
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 cup zucchini, grated coarsely
1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, grated
1 can (10 oz.) enchilada sauce

Heat the oil and fry the tortillas for just a few seconds, until soft. Drain them on a plate lined with paper towels. Pour about 1/3 of the can of enchilada sauce to cover the bottom of an 8x8 square baking pan. Lay out a tortilla and put some cheese, onion, and zucchini down the center. Roll it up and place seam side down in the pan. Repeat with the other tortillas, then pour the rest of the sauce over the top and make sure all the tortillas get some sauce on them so they don't dry out. Sprinkle with more cheese and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes, until hot and the cheese is melted.

I've been experimenting with making barrettes...

...and I got to wondering. I can't be the only one. What sort of barrettes are my fellow teammates coming up with?

Well, that's an easy search.

First I found these two stunning pieces from The Rustic Home and LisamariesPiece.

These are the sort of barrettes that I find myself drooling over at craft fairs. My hair is pretty thick, so I need nice things to hold it back. Sturdy is good too.

Then I saw these shiny ones by The Pink Camellia and 2Dy4.

It was hard to narrow it down to one example from each of these shops. Too many choices.

Then there were some flower-themed from Snapdragon Lace and Rindow Designs.

I need to stop looking. There are so many nice barrettes and hair accessories. I can't choose.

These from Lil' Princess Bowtique and My Sweetie Bean are way cute.

These are aimed at a younger set. I don't think I could get away with wearing them myself. Although, I might just try...

Finally, the unique from Tresijas and EvalynBlackDesigns.

The first one is from an actual vinyl record album. As for the second, we all know that feathers are really big in accessories at the moment.

I'm impressed. I think it's time to extend my barrette collection. Can you ever have too many barrettes?

As you know, my birthday is coming (if you forgot, it's at the end of the month). In an effort to help your shopping, I've compiled a little list of some things I love.

(Sorry for hijacking the blog today. I had to do it. Certain members of my family--they know who they are--are kind of hopeless when it comes to selecting birthday gifts for me. They need all the help they can get!)

The birthstone for July is the ruby. While I don't wear a lot of jewelry, I do wear earrings, and these by aubepine and Earthly Baubles caught my eye:

We've had some warm weather, perfect to pass the time having a picnic. Here are a few things you might need ........

Personally, I like it!

Have you ever noticed that you can look at a whole page of words and your name will just pop out at you like it's highlighted? Our name is one of the first things we learn how to spell as a child. I love to have things personalized with my name, and from the way personalized items sell on Etsy I'm pretty sure other people feel the same. One of my favorite possessions is a pendant that has my husband's and my name hand sawn out of sterling - I rarely take it off. Another is a pair of silver bracelets that have been stamped with quotes that have a special meaning to me, even the inside of them are stamped with words even though no one will see them but me. I think that pieces that have words or names on them take on a special meaning, as though it is imbued with the spirit of that person. Almost to the point that losing it or breaking it is a sign of bad luck. Folkloric California - Celebrating the Folk Art of California

Hello! My name is Gwendolyn Garcia, known as seller GwendolynForever on etsy. The mainstream culture of my home state has always been influenced by a rich mixture and mingling of cultural diversity, ethnicity, and history. From the missions, street names, and names of cities influenced by the Spanish, China Town in San Francisco, or the farm workers from South America, and many, many others, our state of California is a colorful blend of many. I myself am a product of the American Dream and the promise of a free and easy society that all people associate with California. Though the American dream often seems unobtainable to most, and the free and easy lifestyle of California doesn't come without a price, folk art represents the hope and truth of a society. Being born of multiple ethnicities and descending from ancestors who immigrated to this country in search of freedom and an opportunity to build a better life for themselves and their families, I have always been moved by the vibrant colours, sounds, and flavors of California.

Folkloric is defined by Wikipedia as "Folklore culture, including stories, music, dance, legends, oral history, proverbs, jokes, popular beliefs, customs, and so forth within a particular population comprising the traditions (including oral traditions) of that culture, subculture, or group." In this article, I am featuring the art work that has a folk flavor and charm and represents the resilient, cheerful, competent, and culturally diverse spirit of Californians. This is the California that I know and love.

My foster grandmother, who is of Mexican descent, has rooster decor in her kitchen. Does she know it is a Portuguese custom? I doubt it. However, she grew up on a ranch in Texas, and on that ranch there were chickens. Then she moved to Oxnard where she made her living laboring on farms, and she raised chickens there, too. Chickens are something people from many cultures can relate to because they represent a source of sustenance that crosses cultural boundaries.

There are some strange people on etsy. (Yeah, I'm one of them. I can admit this.) As I was flailing about for a topic for today, I found something that made me laugh.

It's a soda can cozy from Handamade. Too cute.

As I perused Handamade's shop, it occurred to me that other CCCOE'ers must have the sort of off-the-wall items that would amuse me, so I went looking. Here are a few things I found...

Do we define our world, or does our world define us? I have to say that I've made some things for my Etsy store that I'm sure I would never had thought of making. Robots, foxes, mustaches, owls, narwhals - all things that were never in my repetoire prior to discovering Etsy, and all popular themes on Etsy. I really LIKE foxes and owl, and I don't think I've been even been with a man that didn't have a mustache, but would I have thought of making them if it wasn't for Etsy? Did Etsy make them popular or are they popular despite Etsy? I just recently bought a pair of fingerless gloves - an item that had never before entered my mind as something I should own until I saw them on Etsy (they're actually quite handy). Still, Etsy tends to have a great influence on us creative types, especially if we are business people as well as makers and like to sell as much as we like to create. Here are some great examples of the themes that are popular on Etsy, with buyers and sellers alike. I'm Michelley QueenofQueens.

My etsy shop bears the incredibly creative name
"queenofqueens".

2. Day or night job if you have one.

Like most artists I've worked a wide variety of day and night jobs. Currently I'm lucky enough to work solely in the field of visual art. I paint, make wacked out art doodads and - I tattoo. I don't enjoy hurting people for money, but they keep asking me to do it so how can I refuse? Seriously though, I actually love helping people manifest the visions they have of themselves. It's the only collaborative work I do. Its incredibly gratifying to permanently imbue a person's body with art they get to keep forever.

3. Where do you get the inspiration for your designs/shop?

Nothing gives me a bigger brain boner than nature's infinite diversity and beauty. I've also been deeply influenced by early Warner Bros cartoons, Low budget horror movies, Watership Down, Angela Carter, Beatrix Potter, Madeline L'engle and the American Revolutionary War.

4. What was your favorite vacation as a child?

I mostly took vacations of my own imagining when I was small. I liked to think of our backyard raspberry patch as a jungle. I imagined the daffodil bed as a fairy kingdom and the woods behind my best friend Veronica's house were a place of deep mystery and intrigue. This is probably the impression most grade school kids have during daytime explorations of woods inhabited by teenagers at night.

5. What did you have for dinner today?

Spaghetti!

I'd see as much of the world as possible, down to the infinitesimal details. I'd spend hours scouring all its dark corners, unearthing hidden treasures to share in show and tell with those I love. Think of all the mogwai, mermaids and jackalopes I'd find!

In middle school, I once inhaled helium at a 4-H fair where my friend Janice and I were selling balloons. We'd inhale then ask passersby in cartoonishly high voices if they wanted to buy our wares. It was our marketing gimmick. It didn't raise our revenue but we got a stockpile of weird looks and nervous smiles from the adults passing by. So worth it.

10. How many hours do you spend a day searching for stuff on Etsy?

If I'm curating a treasury for one of my teams (I'm the Captain of the Etsy Queer Team and I'm also on the Etsy Ugly Cute Team as well as CCCOE) I can truly enter an etsy worm hole and not emerge for hours. Seriously, shopping on etsy is like walking through the back of C.S. Lewis' wardrobe, time just flies when you're surrounded by so much magickal deliciousness.

Tools of the Knitting Trade

At its most basic, knitting is about two sticks and some string.

Two sticks. Knitting needles. There are so many varieties to choose from. Sure, there are the utilitarian models out there, but when you're spending so much time on a project, you want your tools to be beautiful, like these from Mama's Magic Studio...

And some string. Yarn. Yarn is so easy to find if you know where to look. But why knit with ordinary yarn. There are so many artists who spin and hand-dye their own, like Excavations...

Once you've got the basics, it's time to acquire other accessories. If you've got stunning needles and scrumptious yarn, the rest of your tools should shine as well.

Some patterns are complicated. Some patterns are knit in the round. To help a knitter keep her (or his) place, stitch markers are a must. Here are some fine examples from AG Mode and Ohmayzee...

Another cool accessory to have is a yarn bowl, like this one from Anuart. What is a yarn bowl? You put your yarn in the bowl and thread the end through the hole. This keeps your yarn from going all over the place while you are knitting.

Once you have all your supplies, you need something to knit. It isn't hard to find some great patterns, such as this one from Phydeaux Designs...

Hello! My name is Gwendolyn Garcia, also known as seller GwendolynForever on etsy. Since 1970, April 22 has become the internationally recognized day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of a clean, healthy environment. It was founded by a senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, who witnessed the devastating effects of an oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. He became deeply angered when he came upon an overall lack of action towards awareness and change by politicians in Washington. He decided that if changes were going to be made in favor of preserving the environment for ourselves and posterity, it was going to happen by educating people.
